The Picture In The Sand
“Hurry up!” Jenna yelled angrily at the two pairs of footsteps behind her.
“We’re coming! You’re going to fast,” Parker called up to her. The girl next to him nodded.
“Well we don’t have that much time before someone notices we’re gone and comes out here,” Jenna told them. She scowled and looked down at her shoes which were filled to the brim with an uncomfortable amount of sand.
When the other two caught up, they looked at the decrepit, sand filled house before them. “How old do you think this house is?” Kira asked.
“I don’t know but the stories about treasure better be true,” Jenna said. She led the way as the three walked into the threshold of the abandoned house.
From first glance, the house was small with only three rooms. Sand poured in from the outside and made it hard for them to walk through. Parker stumbled along which made Jenna have to turn around and help him up.
“Where did grandpa say the treasure would be?” Jenna asked Parker.
“By the stove in the kitchen,” Parker answered.
Jenna looked around at the unidentifiable rooms. “Where is the kitchen supposed to be? How are we supposed to find the stove? We can’t even see the ground!”
“I knew I’d be a hopeless trip,” Kira grumbled.
“No it won’t,” Peter reassured her. He nudged her and Jenna in their sides. “The kitchen is probably the biggest room and the stove is most likely on the wall facing towards the door.”
Jenna looked around. It appeared that they were standing in the biggest room of the house. She looked from the door over to the opposite wall and trudged her way through the sand over to it.
“Let’s start digging before someone comes looking for us or to steal the treasure if there is any.” The other two followed her.
They slowly started digging through the sand which made their hands dry and start to bleed. After a few minutes of digging, Kira said, “I found something!”
The other two went to her side and looked at what she had found. It was half the side of a wooden chest. The three dragged it out of the sand and continued the inspection. “Do you have the key?” Jenna asked Parker.
Parker nodded and drew a small silver key from his pocket and fumbled with the keyhole before being able to insert the key and twist it.
The chest unlocked and Parker opened up the lid. In the chest were several golden coins, spectacular and some gaudy looking pieces of jewelry, and a large picture frame.
Parker gingerly lifted up the frame and the three children looked at a picture of a young woman with light brown skin and curly brown hair dressed as if she was about to travel on a plane.
“It’s grandma,” Jenna said.
