WRITING OBSTACLE

In a short scene, how can your protagonist say “I won’t forget you” without literally saying the words “I won’t forget you”?

Dandelions

I stood up from the ground. My legs were as though there was lead in them. My head was weighed down so much. The ground swayed all around me. The aftermath of the war wasn’t in the good. It looked terrible.

Smoke raised in pillars to the sky, black as obsidian. The fires crackled all around me. After taking in the hardships I remembered….Keegan!!

I frantically looked around for him among the dead and broken bodies and saw his golden hair in the distance. Only it was no longer the color of the rising sun.

I sprinted over to him and knelt down to him. His breaths were coming up short and a pool of blood had formed under him.

He looked up at me and smiled softly. “Hey there my Comet.”

I smiled and quietly asked, “How are you?”

“Well we won!! So I’m good… Hey promise me something…”

I nodded at him to continue to speak. His eyes were so unfocused and blurry. I knew he didn’t have much time.

“Promise me to never keep making wishes on dandelions.”

I chuckled softly and nodded. “I promise”

With that he took his final breath. My smile faded as thought of his promise.

It was a warm summer day and Keegan and I were running through a field. As we slowed down to catch our breaths he flopped down to the ground dragging me with him.

As we both plopped down a small puff of dandelions blew around us. We smiled at the small florets.

“Hey make a wish Star.” He said as he grabbed one and closed his eyes. After a second he opened and took a breath and blew it out.

“What was it?”

“My wish? Oh, I wished that no matter what I won’t be forgotten. I’m going down in gold. Or as a legend. If I die to won’t forget me right?”

“No. As long as the sun raises and and sets you’re staying in my head.”

He chuckled as he pulled me closer to him. “That works for me”.

So now….ill make sure you have the remembrance you always wanted.
