Straws

Writing Prompt: June 8 - "Write a short story in the 'magical realism' genre."

"That's it, that's the last straw" Melanie thought to herself. "Thank God. I don't think I could put together one more of these Pinterest-inspired cocktail glasses with their organic, paper, lasts-for-two-seconds straws."

"I know it's rough, dear. Just hold it together a bit longer. You've almost made the cut." Thelma advised, having heard Melanie's rant as if it had been spoken aloud.

They had both been working to join this particular catering team for months now. This team was the VIP team, the absolute best, the team that got to work events like the Met, The Oscars, and some of the more upscale afterparties.

Melanie and Thelma had reached this level within the service industry with near magical speed. Typically, career catering staff might take a few years to get to where they got within a month or two. Outsiders saw it as dedication, an eye to detail, and extreme efficiency. Mel and Thel, as they liked to call themselves, knew better.

They'd discovered their gifts early on in their highschool years, and vowed:

1) Never tell anyone

2) Live life to the funnest

Since they realized they could magic themselves almost anything they needed, they agreed that the best way forward was to use their gifts moderately, and just enjoy the life they had. If anything happened, they'd conjure up the solution required in that moment.

Thel had found this gig and they'd both aced the interviews and taken a week or so to find the team they both wanted to work on. A week after that, two members of the current VIP staff got unexpectedly promoted (Mel thought about just giving them diarrhea for the night, but Thel was thinking long-term and didn't savor the idea of using their powers to make loose bowels.)

They'd been immediately called on because they had a long history (or so it seemed) of excellent service skills.

Sometimes, that meant taking an hour to unwrap the individually packaged paper straws that noone liked and everyone would immediately remove from their drinks as soon as they were served.

"Abraca-laminate" Thel said. One of the paper straws wrapped itself in a thin sleeve of plastic that hadn't existed a few seconds ago, and settled back into the drink.

If there was one thing they could be certain of, tonight, the guests would be commenting on the paper straws that magically stayed crisp.
