POEM STARTER

Write a poem or short story that embodies the feeling of being chosen last.
Slow and Steady Doesn’t Always Win
I’ve been told
Slow and steady wins the race
To prioritize, patience and quality
Over speed and quantity
But moving at the
Feels like running on a treadmill
Going somewhere in nowhere at all
The mileage on the treadmill reads 4,000
4,000 miles in four years
And yet I’ve gotten to nowhere
Traveled no more than the 8.8 miles it takes to get to school
And haven’t made any real friendships
Never invited to house parties
Or birthday parties
Never invited to sleepover
Or hangout at the mall
And the few times I have been invited somewhere,
It’s never because they actually want me there
“ Hey so-and-so, canceled so I was wondering if…”
“ Everyone else is busy do you want to…”
“ I have an extra ticket if…”
So on and so forth
If only they left at the beginning and lead with “ I was wondering if…”
Then the sentence will become much sweeter
Than it’s bitter original
How draining it is to be the floater friend
The one left to walk in the grass as a rest, walk on the sidewalk
The one to listen to the rant of other
Yet having to silence their own
So it doesn’t matter if you run for five minutes or five hours
Because slow and steady doesn’t win the race against loneliness
