The Number of Moons
On the outskirts of a small village was a peaceful lake. It sat calmly at the edge of a less-traveled path in a sparse forest. The path was lined with short stone walls, and upon one of these walls sat Huo Linghun and Xiao Xin. They faced the lake, listening to the quiet sounds of the night and looking at the stars. The moon was nestled brightly among the stars, its reflection shining on the lake's smooth surface.
Xiao Xin pointed at it and said, "The moon." He often pointed it out like this, as though proud to have remembered learning about what it was before his time in the crater.
"Mhm," Huo Linghun hummed in affectionate agreement.
"Usually we are not like the moon," Xiao Xin continued.
"Usually?" Huo Linghun asked curiously.
"Usually there is just one," Xiao Xin said, pointing at the moon in the sky. Then his finger traveled downward to point at the moon's reflection in the lake. "Tonight there is two. So we are like the moon tonight."
Huo Linghun nodded along as if he knew what Xiao Xin was talking about.
"You are the moon in the sky and I am the moon in the lake, looking up at you," Xiao Xin said.
"Oh? Why is that?" Huo Linghun asked.
"Because you are taller than me," Xiao Xin replied simply.
Huo Linghun suddenly hopped off the stone wall and lifted Xiao Xin in the air above his head. "Unless I do this!" he said. "Now you are the moon in the sky and I'm looking up at you."
Xiao Xin laughed and kicked his feet. "Linghun!" he protested.
Huo Linghun stopped lifting him above his head and held him close in his arms instead. He gave him a quick kiss and said, "I think, if we were two moons, we'd be right next to each other."
"I think so too," Xiao Xin agreed. "Just like this." With that he kissed him deeply beneath the glow of the moon in the sky.
