Imposter
She frantically searched the crowed room for her friends, desperately looking for a glimpse of their faces in the swarm of body’s she was trapped in.
“Callum!” Marlene called out, standing on her very tip toes to spot him if he was there. But nothing.
“Darla!” She shouted a bit louder this time but still, there was nothing, the only sound in the room being drunkens and party music. Marlene searched the house in panic, she had been uneasy since they arrived at the house and the disappearance of her friends made her stomach churn even further. Marlene didn’t even want to come to this party, if she hadn’t given into Darlas (who had now left her to get drunk) pleads she would’ve been safe and sound at home. But instead she was being pushed and barged in the mob of sweaty teenagers surrounding her. After what felt like hours tearing and squeezing her way through the horde she reached the back door. Thankfully seeing her friends sat on the steps of the pool.
“Guys! Where were you? You left me in there!” She accused, upset but relieved she had found them.
Instead of the apologies and guilty looks she thought she was going to receive she seen their eyes turn dark like a sudden storm. They all turned to look at her and a sudden shiver ran up her spine making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
“She’s not who she says she is.” A voice -that Marlene didn’t recognise- stated, as she looked around Marlene quickly realised she couldn’t see the person who had made such a confusing comment.
However her friends seemed to recognise the anonymous person because Callum nodded and Darla looked around wearily making Marlene raise her eyebrows.
“We know you’re not Marlene.” Callum declared, what could he possibly be talking about?
She took a step back and hesitantly stuck up her hands in an attempt to create peace.
“Are you guys on the something?” Marlene asked carefully, looking into both of their eyes for a sign of intoxication.
Callum stepped forward, Marlene stepped back, looking at Darla with disbelief.
“Are you not gonna stop him darls? He’s clearly drunk!” Marlene exclaimed, the high pitched tone giving away her composed demeanour.
“Stop acting like you don’t know what’s going on.” The other girl muttered, her eyes pointed to the floor and her fists clenched.
Marlene’s breath began to shake, accelerating into an unsteady pace of gasps and whimpers as Callum got closer, his hands raised and out towards her as if he was trying to trap a feral animal. This couldn’t be happening, Marlene stepped back for the third time but how many times could a step back keep her from harm?
“Now!” Callum barked, taking Marlene by surprise. Before she had time to register his command she was impaled with something sharp and seething with revenge.
Marlene whipped her head down to where the burning sensation was located and there it was, a sword pushed right through her heart. Her fangs began to retract and she could feel her wings began to grow back out. No, no, no! How could she be so stupid, how could she fall right into that utterly stupid plan? Marlene didn’t know. Her facade was over and in a matter of seconds she was high in the air, her wings flapping at a sudden speed that lifted her up like a helicopter. Marlenes eyes, once gentle and kind now full of seething hate and fury.
“Marlene is dead!” The being bellowed, attaching from what once was Marlene’s body which dropped lifelessly onto the grass beneath them.
Darla immediately rushed over, slapping the girls cheek repeatedly but when there was no reaction Darla burst into sorrowful tears. Callum watched as the spirit he had once thought of as a friend dissolved into the night sky.
“You did well.” A voice applauded, a woman appearing from the bushes moments later, lifting the hood of her dark cloak. The distinctive sheriff badge now in the eyesight of both Darla and Callum.
