STORY STARTER
You can’t tell if your upstairs neighbour is genuinely a nice person or if they're really the devil incarnate...
My Neighbor
“BEEP BEEP!” I awake to my alarm screaming at me, It’s 4 in the morning. While still half-asleep I get out of bed, its cold today. Colder than usual. The window beside my bed is open, with the curtins pinned up. I could have sworn that I closed the curtains, and I never leave the window open. Still groggy, I mope to the open window to close it when through the dark I see my neighbors house’s lights on. They just moved here and I have only met them once. They had a friendly smile, almost too friendly. They where putting boxes in their house from their truck. There was an old man who looked in his 60’s. He had tanned wrinkly skin that looked like he had been in the sun too long. He wore overalls and a hat to try to prevent too much sun damage. He looked to be a farmer of some sorts. There was an old lady who looked to be his wife, she was wearing an apron that had flour all over it. She had short curly grey hair and watched the farmer unload their truck. There was also a little kid helping the old man, and a sheep hearding dog. I haven’t seen them since watching them happily unpack their things while coming home from work. Their house isn’t too far from mine, so I an see anything that goes on through the windows. Since all of the lights where on I decided to look into their windows to see why they where awake so early. I saw the old man staring directly back at me grinding ear to ear. We make eye contact for what feels like an eternity and I drop to the floor to avoid any other contact. I get ready, still creeped out from what had happened. I make sure that every door and window is closed and locked, and I make sure that the curtins on every window are closed. I then rush out of the house so that I am not late, because of taking the extra time to close, lock, and double check all of the locks. I work at an office as an assistant, and have long hours, but it pays the bills and keeps food on the table. I’ve had this job for years, and don’t want to quit, it lets me forget about what happened last year. I get off work at 8:00 pm and get home at about 8:30pm. I take the bus which typically takes a while, and walk the rest of the way home. Once I get close, I slow down at my neighbor’s house. I try to inspect the yard and what I can see of the house. I figured that they would be home because of how late it is. As I try to unsuspectingly peer though the window of what seems to be their kitchen when I see the old lady. She’s smiling a large smile like how her husband did this morning. I can see all of her teeth, and stretch marks on her face from her constant grinning. She is staring out the window in my direction. I look around still slowly walking, but nothing is around me. She must be starring at me. I speed into a faster walk. Then a jog. I look at their backyard and see the old man. He is staring at me too. His eyes piercing me. His grin looks un-human, it is unnaturally spread too far across his face. His pupils dilate until his eyes are just a dark void. I look back to what I can still see of the kitchen but she isn’t there anymore. Their dog starts barking. The dog gets louder and louder and I hear a chain clank. I reach my door. I hurry in and lock it eminently. I sit slumped on the floor in silence. Waiting. Until something happens. I finally work up the courage to go to my room to get my laptop so I can look up what is happening. I walk through my house. The once warm, cozy place now deserted and eerie. Some things are scattered about but I assume that it was from my half asleep self from this morning. I hope it is. I put my hand on the door, its warmer than usual. I turn the door knob and slowly creep into my room. The hot air hits me as a breeze goes bye. The window is wide open. I frantically look around my room and everything is scattered. I run to the window to try and close it. I could have sworn I locked it. The window won’t close! I shove it down as hard as I can but it won’t budge! Panic sets in as I keep frantically trying to close it. I catch a glimpse through the window. They are there. All of them. The old lady is 8 feet away from me. She is in the front lawn, her smile twisting her face. Her hair a curly mess on top of her head. Her wrinkles exaggerated. Her black eyes staring at me. The old man is at the edge of their backyard fence. His limbs are long, it looks like he is 9 feet tall. His void eyes stair at me. Their dog has turned into a large beast. It’s teeth have turned into large fangs, as drool drips down his mouth. They are all slowly walking to me. There is something missing. Wasn’t there a kid? I hear giggling coming from a few feet behind me. A child’s laughter. I swiftly jolt to look behind me. It’s the kid. He starts laughing historically. He is drooling some rainbow liquid from his giant smile. His eyes aren’t just a dark void, but it looks like the absence of anything at all. Pure nothingness. His laugh calms to a giggle and he slowly tilts his head, still smiling the largest than anyone else. The rainbow drool turns black. It looks like the same darkness as all of their eyes. It slowly starts dripping down his eyes, if that’s what you could call them. He jumps at me, his arms wrapping around my neck almost suffocating me. Everything goes dark as I try to scream. I wake up in a mysterious void. I see the family, but they aren’t smiling. They seem sad. They are standing over a grave with flowers. The little boy is bawling his eyes out on the floor as his grandparents try not to cry. The dog is even whimpering. In a barely audible voice he mumbles that she is the last parent he has, and that his father had already left. I stare at the terrible scene, wondering how something so horrible could happen. I look around me to try and find a way out when I see myself. I am wearing all black and crying. I walk over to see what happened. A picture of him. The love of my life. Tears welled up in my eyes. I gently caress the old photo. Me, a happy-go-lucky lady, and a guy who left too soon. Before I know it, I’m on the floor in tears. A strange figure approaches me. It has a large smile and long limbs, like my neighbors, but it has no human qualities. I ask what it wants, still crying. It makes some odd noises, It sounds like distorted words. I can make out. “You,””like them,””sad,””fuel,””next.” I wake up. I’m on the floor. My eyes burn. My face hurts. I run to the bathroom to see if I am normal. Oh no. My eyes are black endless voids. My Mouth is carved into a permanent grin. There is black goo dripping down my eyes. I’m one of them. I run to my living room. It’s him. He is there. I see the neighbor kid sprint to his dead body. How did it get here? He’s been buried for a year. The kid shoves his face into my dead husband’s chest. He sinks his teeth through his skin. The kid tears the skin off revealing his insides. The kid goes insane, blood goes everywhere. Pieces of the love of my life’s body fly around the room. My stomach growls. I can smell the delicious scent of meat. I slowly walk to the dead body. I sit next to the kid. I slowly take a bite of my dead husband. My teeth sink into his skin, the taste of his flesh is the most delicious thing I’ve tasted. I lose control and the two of us devour the entirety of the dead body. I jolt back. What have I just done? I’m a monster! I walk outside to get away from the gruesome scene. I font think I can handle this new life. I grab a few cords around my house and try to wrap them around my neck but it only goes through my neck. I go into my kitchen and try to get the sharpest knife I have but It does nothing but create black goo around the cut. I try everything I can think of. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I bury myself in my room. I don’t come out for days. The only thing keeping me entertained is the constant memory of eating my own husband’s dead body, and the sound of my growling stomach, aching for more human flesh. Eventually everything goes black. I’m back in the void world. I see a figure like I am now, but its glowing white, not just white, but lighting itself. I run as fast as I can to it. Black goo streams down my unrecognizable face. I reach it. That’s it. The end. Nothing else. Just emptyness.
