POEM STARTER

Write a poem about a bird who was once human.
Even now, it remembers what it was like to have hands, to touch, to hold, and to feel. Now wings beat where arms once moved, but the memories never fade.
What We Give Up
I’m perching on the thin wire,
My wings tight next to my body
My eyes peeled on the patio
Where they are all dancing.
It is devastating to watch,
The spins and dips and movement,
Legs and feet moving fast
Mouths talking, laughter abounds.
I once could to those things
And there was such abandonment.
Twisting and twirling, bodies close.
There was warmth then and such joy
But now I am totally alone
And spend time grubbing for bugs.
I gave up that human world on a whim
Seeking new experiences.
I wanted to fly, to soar above the trees
And when I got my wish I was content.
Until I wasn’t.
Now I can fly
But cannot speak.
I can soar above
But without warmth.
I fly alone.
Always alone.
My words are gone
But now I can fly.
