WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a short story in the 'magical realism' genre.
This genre centres around magical occurrences presented in an otherwise real-world setting.
Dragons!
No one batted an eye when the dragons flew over New York City. In fact, it took the first person almost 20 minutes to notice, as he looked up to scratch his stiffened neck. He only stared, wide-eyed, and pointed. Someone smashed into him, cursed, then kept on plowing through.
“Dragons!” The man with the stiff neck shouted.
A child, no older than 6, turned around and pointed as well. “Dragons, mommy, dragons!”
They batted their webbed wings and breathed fire around the buildings, but the structures seemed to repel it, leaving only a coat of glitter on its shiny surface.
“Come on, sweetie.” The mother grabbed the child firmly by the arm and dragged him forward. She took one final look at the staring man in pity.
“Dragons!” The man grabbed the shoulders of the nearest passerby, who had their nose in their phone, and shook. “How do you not see?”
Startled, the person squirmed free of the man and kept walking, briskly, nose back in his phone.
“Move it!” Another man smashed into him. “Stop blocking the sidewalk!”
“But how does no one see it?” He looked around for the child once more. “No one in this damn city ever looks up!”
