Escape

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! Leslie lay sprawled across her bed, idly scrolling through her phone, when a sharp knock rattled the front door. Frowning, she slipped into her sandals and padded to the window. Outside, Louis paced, sweat glistening on his brow. The door slowly opens, Louis' eyes instantly looking up. Sweat runs down the temples of his head, he shivers slightly. "Hey, babe! I thought you'd be at work right now." Leslie says with happiness but slight confusion in her tone. She senses something is off seeing her boyfriend at this time of day. Louis suddenly grabs Leslie's arm, gently tugging her. "H-Hey! What are you doing?!" Leslie says out, feeling a shiver down her spine. "We need to leave, now," Louis’s voice drops, tight and low, fear sharpening every word. Leslie's eyes widen, looking left and right, confused. "Is there something wrong ba-" she gets cut off as Louis pulls harder, making her lose balance, forcing her to walk towards Louis's red coupe. Leslie's knees shake, completely oblivious to her boyfriend's actions. "I will tell you later, but you have to trust me. Get in the car," Louis orders, his voice shaking. Her chest rose and fell in shallow bursts. She nodded, jerky and uncertain. Louis grasps the handle of the door, swings it open, and steps inside while starting the engine immediately. Leslie watches Louis enter in a hurry, hesitating as she stares at the door handle, doubting if she should enter. He looks at Leslie, starting to panic, "Get in!" Louis yells with frustration and desperation. She yelps, flinching as she's caught off guard by Louis' stern, loud voice. She flinches, startled by a side of Louis she’s never seen. His eyes are wide, desperate, locked onto hers. She nods, hesitant, and slips into the passenger seat. The car suddenly accelerates, its tires screeching against the asphalt. Thick, black marks are left behind on the road. Louis drives carelessly, eyes focused on the mirrors, speeding down the neighborhood. Leslie screams in fear, She clutched the grimy interior handle. Her breath shaking, "W-What's happening?!" She demands, but Louis remains quiet. Louis runs a red light, horns blare as a truck screeches to a halt, barely missing them. Leslie yells, glancing back as the truck skids to a halt, just inches from disaster. Her heart is beating uncontrollably, hyperventilating. She turns her head to look at her boyfriend, fearing for her life. "Tell me what's happening, right now!" Louis continues driving recklessly, eyes focused on the mirrors as he drifts into the freeway entrance, leaving more black marks on the pavement. Leslie yells again, both their bodies swinging side to side by the gravity of the car's movements. "We are in danger, okay?! And we need to leave, right now!" Leslie glares at her frightened boyfriend, shaking her head side to side, utterly lost. "In danger? From what?!" Louis swerves. Ninety miles per hour. No sign of slowing. "What I'm going to say will be crazy, but I need you to trust me." Leslie pants, her body still tense as she grips onto the handle with her dear life. She weakly nods. Louis turns his attention to Leslie's scared, confused expression as he takes a gulp, difficult to speak without stuttering. "I-I have a confession. I-I am, ugh...a...hero..." Louis says weakly, barely audible. Leslie turns her head, her eyebrows raised in more confusion. "You're a hero? What does that even mean?" "It means I'm Power Man!" Louis yells out, his breath shaky. The words hit the air like a gunshot. Leslie blinks. “You’re…what?” She stared at him, blinking fast, like the words hadn’t registered. “That’s not funny, Louis. You think this is a joke?” Her expression immediately changes when she sees tears flow down Louis's cheeks. He silently sobs. "Someone came to the store, telling me he knew my identity and asked how you were doing. I-I thought they hurt you, babe. I don't know who he is, but he knows me. I am scared for your life. I'm sorry, Leslie. I-I should've told you sooner." Louis snorts, tears dripping onto his dirty jeans, breaking down. "Holy shit. Y-You're not lying." Leslie says quietly.
