POEM STARTER

Write a poem on the theme of returning.

You could write about returning to a physical place, or a more metaphorical meaning of this theme.

Returning Home

In the car and off I roam,

Back to the place I once called home.

The little pond for this big fish,

A place I admit I do not miss.

When you are there and go to the store,

You’re bound to bump into three or more,

People that went to school with me.

There is no anonymity.

One employer for half the town,

Entertainment is driving around.

Quite a few are school drop outs,

Drugs abundantly about.

I’m no longer part of the clique,

A sticker that has lost its stick.

Not one for gossip or local news,

A former member of the crew.

I see the people I once called friends,

Just scraping by with means to ends.

Still working at the supermarket,

Same old car space where they park it.

Same footy teams each weekend,

Get drunk then do it all again.

Everyone a club superstar,

Loyal dogs on leads that don’t go far.

As we put him in the ground,

I find I’m grateful that I found,

A way away from my old pack.

Cos this town would just hold me back.
