A Change of Scene
For once, Daisy couldn't picture what her life would look like.
Perhaps she would wander aimlessly on cobblestone streets steeped in history or in towns famous for their coffee beans or their chocolate or their fish. Perhaps she would write inside trains going any direction, through whistling wheat fields, bustling cities with towers that nearly touch the clouds, or along a coastline watching the ocean sweep away grains of sand. Perhaps she would live more in her mind than in the world, dreaming as she had as a kid with no awareness of physical needs.
Sitting at her desk where she often sat staring at a screen with her blue light glasses, she thought about all the times she woke up in this very room. Her consciousness came with this weight on her chest, a knowingness that this day would be the same as every other. That unlike the characters in the fantasy books on her nightstand, she would wonder what her purpose is until she inevitably runs out of time.
She might shrink under the comfortable safe haven of her cotton covers for a few moments. Maybe many moments, wondering why she must sit upright. Knowing that she needs to nourish her mind, her body, and her soul, and yet not knowing how. Her eyes are dry from working at a screen all day in a digitalized world, but it pays her rent in the most expensive city in the country. It's everything she dreamed of as a kid to be so self-sustaining, able to wave away problems with a tap of her credit card.
And yet, she wondered if this was all there was to life. So one day, she interrupted the rhythm of what was her daily life. It was a ruthless metronome that she had grown overly comfortable with, anticipating the next beat without a thought.
Now in her hands was a one way ticket to a different continent. It was time for a change of scene.
