Mercy
“If only the world had shown me a little more mercy.” She stands in the burning rubble, her dark hair whipping around her face in the wind. “Maybe it wouldn’t have come to this”, she gestures to the destruction around her. “ All I wanted was someone to show me a speck of kindness, some food or maybe a bed”. “It really wouldn’t have been that hard, that inconvenient. They were all too absorbed in their own busy lives to care about the girl on the street”. At the word busy she rolls her dark brown eyes. I ponder that for a moment, picture her on the streets, begging. She doesn’t seem to be someone to beg. I always thought she would be too proud. Finally I speak,” I know the world was cruel but I can help you. It’s not too late”. I can hear the desperation slip through, seeping into my words. “ It wasn’t fair, I know, but that doesn’t mean the world has to burn”. “Doesn’t it?” She smirks and I can see it in her eyes, they reflect the world around her, broken. “Why shouldn’t they suffer? I know I did”. I know then that she is gone. Every fragment on the girl I once knew, gone. That girl was selfless, she never wanted anyone to bear the same struggles she’d had to. I find myself wishing she had been shown a little more mercy. That girl wouldn’t have burned one who showed her mercy. This woman wants revenge on those who ignored her. If she has to burn the world down then so be it.
