POEM STARTER
Write a poem that shows how a single moment in a person’s childhood still affects them to this day.
It does not have to be a something negative...
Burnout
Easter 1985
The third time the car let us down
Was on the hill coming out of
A cleansing break in Bath,
Back-dragged by a caravan
Weighed down with
Sepia, Super 8 holiday memories.
Dad called the AA
To save the day. Again.
Relayed home:
Father, sons and
Mum's unholy views on camping.
The car returned from the dead
Three days later,
Along with Dad's steering wheel smile.
Easter 2025
The third time his body let him down
He'd "lost control"
Going round a tight bend
On a half-remembered hill
Coming out of
An uncleansing break in Bath.
He'd joined the AA
Two days before
To save the day. Again.
After years of saving days
And nights of knight in white armour syndrome,
His body relayed home
To tearful sons and
Mum's unholy views on funerals.
At his, they all recalled
How his smile was so like his Dad's.
