POEM STARTER
Write a poem about a physical journey that you have been on.
Explore the tangible aspects of a journey you have been on, and how these physical characteristics may have impacted mental and spiritual aspects of the journey too.
Hauling Loads
The sun is just starting to breach. I wake up to the sound of the work truck starting next to me. Another night in a vacant parking lot with other sleeping guests curled up in their trucks, all waiting for one thing, to start their long journeys of hauling loads for the day.
I start pulling myself up to the front seat from the backseat of my coup. I think to myself do people see the load I’m carrying? I don’t have a big truck with lumber or a flatbed with piplines traveling to a job site.
It’s just my two door coup and me gaining miles.
Two ears pop up from the passenger floor, brown eyes and a twitching nose. “Alfalfa! How’s my little bunny doing?” I squeal, he blinks back at me.
I stare at this little rabbit that has been traveling with me. I stare at his wispy whispers and his quick movements when I try to grab some leftover lettuce from my sandwhich. He nibbles while i ponder about the day ahead. I’m drumming my fingers on the steering wheel and look back down at the makeshift bed I made for the rabbit.
I finally break from my troubled thoughts and look back in my rearview mirror to see how many trucks have left the lot. I wish there was a destination or a stop on my journey to let go some of my loads, catch a few breaths, lighten up the heaviness, but instead I turn to the brown eyes and twitching nose, “we are going to figure it out” I say confidently, he blinks back at me again. I start driving and out onto the highway we call home, racking more miles than the memories we have from the miserable past left behind at exit 63. All I know is this coup can’t carry our loads forever but somehow this rabbit and I carried eachother through it without words or a nice home, and I think I’m slowly starting to realize where my home is, next to a little brown eyed bunny with his twitching nose.
