A New Outlook In Life
I think I just met the happiest person in the world!…
It was Saturday morning, the sky was gray, and I was planning to go out and party with my friends. “Why did it have to rain today?” I asked myself, as I stared out of the window wondering when the sun was going to show up. The weather only seemed to get worse, so I changed my plans. I headed to my bedroom and laid on my bed, didn’t even bother to change my pajamas and went back to sleep.
Hours passed by, it was 1:00 pm when I woke up, rain was still pouring outside, so I sat on the couch to binge watch movies for the rest of the day. I started to get hungry after watching a couple movies, so as anyone would do in a day like this, I ordered a pizza and a large soda; because there was no way I was going going to waste my time cooking and washing dishes in such a depressing day, oh I was so annoyed by how my Saturday plans had been ruined by the terrible rain.
After a 30 minute wait, the pizza delivery girl showed up at my door. She seemed to be in her 20s, somewhere close to my age. The interaction with her could have been just short and polite, but it wasn’t, because when I opened the door, she greeted me with the biggest smile in spite of being wet from head to toes. “Hi, I’m Grace, how are you this evening? I’m here to deliver your pizza,” she said with excitement. “Hi, thank you,” I said as I was about to hand her the money for the food. Somehow, Grace didn’t leave right after that, but in a kind and soft voice she said “Hey, if you don’t mind me asking, you don’t seem to be very happy, I was wondering if there is anything I could pray for you about?
I was a little bit shocked to be honest, nobody asked me that before, but I figure it would do no harm and she seem like a nice person, so I replied “well, I was just looking forward to having fun with my friends today, but the awful rain ruined that for me. I have been working all week at a job that I don’t even like, so I was really looking forward to today.” Grace said “oh, I totally get that… would you mind telling me your name?”
-“My name is Angela,” I answered. “Okay Angela, let’s close our eyes,” said Grace as she had a hand on my shoulder and began her prayer “Dear God, here I am with Angela, who is not having a very good day, I put her in your hands so that you fill her with Your joy, even in a rainy day like today. In the same way, I ask that You will provide for her a new job, a job that she loves. May she trust the wonderful plans You have for her life, In Jesus Name, Amen.”
The moment that Grace finished the prayer, I was overwhelmed, I never felt so cared for and seen before. I didn’t even know what to say, so I smiled and in a quiet voice I said “thank you, I needed that.” “It’s no problem,” Grace replied, “I like praying for people, and God hears every prayer. Hey, this might seem weird because I know we just met, but for some reason I feel like we could be very good friends….would you like to come to church with me tomorrow morning?”
I never met a person like Grace before, so outgoing, kind, and easy to talk to. “Well, yes, I would… I just never been to church before, it’s that a problem?” Angela said. “No, it’s no problem at all, everyone is welcomed,” Grace said.
We planned where to meet on Sunday to head to the church together, we exchanged phone numbers and we said bye to each other. As I closed the door behind her, I realized that I had made a new friend and that my sadness was gone. My Saturday wasn’t that bad after all.
On Sunday morning I went to the church with Grace as we had agreed, and it was more beautiful than I could explain. When I went in, everyone welcomed me with a smile, and people were getting close to me to introduce themselves; I was not used to feeling all this warmth. Then we sat down in the second row and the preacher started speaking about how God changes everything in life, and how our thoughts can become more positive once we trust God. I didn’t really know what that meant, until the service was over and I asked Grace if she could explain this to me further. Grace said “When You trust God is like a weight is lifted of your shoulders. You know that God cares for you and He will help you in every circumstance. It’s not that followers of God are perfect or have everything figured out, but they find rest in knowing that a perfect God loves them and will turn out everything for their good, even situations that seem bad at first.”
And so it clicked, the reason I thought Grace was the happiest person in the world was because she trust Jesus, during the good and the bad times, she still prays and reads her Bible and leans on God. The smile on her face was a “I trust Jesus” smile, and I knew I wanted that too. So right after she explained this to me, I gave my life to Jesus. Best decision I have ever made.
