POEM STARTER
Write a poem exploring expectations and reality.
Dreams don’t always come true, but sometimes the alternative is preferable. Whatever angle you take, examine these two perspectives.
A Ballad Of Denial
Picture this; an invitation hand signed from you for me to come to her party.
An obvious cover for you to enjoy my company
The way you stare at me blissfully thinking I don’t catch your beautiful sage eyes in my direction.
A winding temptation that reaches back months from our first meet,
You could see a future in me in which I could see ours,
Your innocent grin that only few have been lucky to see; I am yet to be one,
Your dainty elegant fingers that struggle to hold most things,
But I accept all of you for you accept me.
I know what you want,
It’s me.
In my finest suit to a house party.
I arrive,
A greeting at the door and nothing more,
“Hi, how are you?”
After that the host is gone like a ghost in the night,
Though she is never really gone,
My unforgiving eyes following her around the party,
Watching her grin and laugh like never before,
Then it dawns on me like a candle illuminating an old home.
Though I will never know how long the party were,
Chained to a rock of solitary eternity in the couple hours I was there.
I am not to stand alongside the balcony and do nothing.
I ask.
But the answer wasn’t good.
“Whatever made you think I would ever love you, even if I could?”
A ring on her crooked patronising hand.
