POEM STARTER
Using twelve stanzas, write a poem about each month of the year.
Gifts By Twelve
Each year starts and ends in Winter,
Its dying and rebirth.
January renews us with resolve,
Reminds us of our earthly life and worth.
As cold and ice may last too long,
A shortened month is needed.
February promises a reprieve
Now Love’s labors are warmly seeded.
The lion is tamed so the lamb may graze,
As wind and wet unwind their fearsome fury.
By shamrock’s time the air turns sublime —
March ends with barely a breeze or flurry.
Then Spring rains come, so soft and gentle,
Spending hours making greener pastures.
April showers flow with Easter flowers —
Nature’s beauty unravels with rapture.
May is for Mothers and memory —
Our summer fun is just around the corner.
June is for Fathers and moonlight —
The kiss of sun and surf become our adorner.
July is why we crave the freedom
To celebrate our independence and liberty.
Fireworks, stars and stripes, trumpets resound —
For we’re unbound from kingly captivity.
Summer heat and haze hang on the horizon;
Beachballs, sun and blessed shade.
August burns with falling stars,
Trips in cars, memories — nicely ice cream made.
September is the heart of harvest time,
When children go back to study at school.
The grape and grain give up their strain,
We gather plenty and practice our Golden Rule.
Come Halloween, to mark the turn of Autumn,
October’s falling of the many-colored leaves.
Such foliage and folly help celebrate what’s gone —
The ghostly dead — our solemn veneration receives.
November is the time for festive feasting —
Family and friends gather, from near and far.
December’s wind welcomes Winter home —
We end the year with happy holidays and the gift of a fabled star.
