POEM STARTER

Write a villanelle about something that has been abandoned.

The villanelle is a type of poem characterised by its repeating lines and ABA rhyme scheme which create a lyrical effect. There are a number of other rules for a full villanelle if you wish to incorporate them.

Hope

We carry hope like embers in our hand,

A flicker faint, but warm against the night,

Yet everyone must learn to understand.

We charted stars and dreamed of promised land,

Believed in suns beyond the edge of sight

We carry hope like embers in our hand.

The sea, indifferent, swallows what we planned,

Its waves erasing lines we thought were right;

Yet everyone must learn to understand.

A fragile thread unravels where we stand,

Its golden weave undone by time’s cruel bite

We carry hope like embers in our hand.

Release the dream, let ashes seed the sand,

For what was held is lost to endless flight,

And everyone must learn to understand.

The wind will scatter what the heart demands,

A spark will fade, surrendering to night

We carry hope like embers in our hand,

Yet everyone must learn to understand.
