POEM STARTER

Write a poem about a birthday.

This doesn't have to be about your own birthday. What themes could you explore through writing about birthdays?

Candles

Another candle for my brother to blow,

Even though they’re my own.

Birthdays last a day,

One I can’t stand,

Because of the aching reminder that even when it’s my day,

He’ll always be first.

Years of trying to stand out,

To share a spot in the light,

I just want my parents to see,

How much they mean to me,

Even I’m not worthy of their love

And I know it’s because I’m not enough.

I wish they’d bought me a cake,

Instead I made it myself,

I wish they’d lit the candles,

A spark that could’ve shined as bright as my brother’s,

But I already know they won’t,

So I’ll do it myself,

In the end… I’ve always been alone
