POEM STARTER
Submitted by Robin Marlowe
Write a poem about unseasonable weather. e.g. A warm day in the winter, or snow in the summer.
Warmer In The Winter
Today
It is warmer in the winter
Than it is
Than in the sun’s unforgiving rays in the winter
Than in the warm repose of spring
Than in the bonfires we light on autumnal evenings
Today
It is warmer in the winter
Than it was before the two degrees
Today
It is warmer in the winter
And our ice is melting
But not just the ice cube that is left mindlessly in our sink
Or a child’s ice cream cone dropped on the sidewalk
But huge mountains of ice
That have trapped disease and sunken the strongest ships
And this happens in the freezing cold
Today
It is warmer in the winter
And our homes are burning
And not just anthills set ablaze by juveniles given access to a magnifying glass
But whole cities,
Forests,
Outbacks,
Are turning to embers
And this happens in the freezing cold
Today
It is warmer in the winter
And our seas are rising
And not just a glass of water someone filled up a little too high
But whole oceans, spanning whole worlds
Are filling over their brim
And we pay the price for it
As Poseidon engulfs our towns
And this happens in the freezing cold
Today
It is warmer in the winter
Because of the things that’s we, as a species, have done
Look at all the dying animals around us!
Look at the toxic plastics in your dinner!
Look at the disasters popping up seemingly everywhere!
Today
It is warmer in the winter
Because of our wrongdoings
But our politicians
Our neighbors
That one random mail carrier
Say
“It’s just nature!”
And brush the issue aside
And refuse to listen to other world leaders
Other neighbors
Coworkers
But these are the idealologies
That are poisoning our mother
Today
It is warmer in the winter
Because humans beings will always be foolish.
