Does Anyone See Beneath The Surface

I often wonder if anyone sees the ground beneath me.

The footprints in the sand or snow or whatever it may be.

The roads I’ve walked and the seas I’ve sailed.

The times I’ve triumphed, and the times I’ve failed.

Beneath the surface of what I show outside.

Does anyone see what I try hard to hide?

The scars I cover, the silent tears at night.

The sorrow of doubts that dim any light.

I laugh and smile as I go about the day.

I join conversations as I pretend all is okay.

Yes, some moments shine with joy as I go along.

Moments of happiness and peace that link together in an upbeat song.

Beneath the surface of all, I let out.

Does anyone hear me scream or shout?

I wear my emotions on my sleeve.

I’ve been told I have a heart of gold, but I’m not sure I believe.

Actions often speak louder than words by those around.

So, I’m trying harder for my thoughts beneath the surface not to be found.

For it has caused much pain and grief before in the past.

If no one sees what I hide, moments of joy can last.

Yet, still, I wonder if anyone sees the footprints I have made.

Or, like when the waves touch them, they begin to fade.
