The Mission
The mission was easy. Get in, get out. At least it should have been. For Amelia this was a death sentence. She knew she wasn't as good as her class at the institute. Any other girl would have been out already. Instead, Amelia was left sitting at a table scanning for the contact she was supposed to meet.
"Delilah?"
Amelia whirled around, a bit too fast she criticized herself. This was her fake name. She shouldn't be surprised by it. "The sun sure seems to dip faster everyday doesn't it?"
"Indeed." the boy didn't make eye contact. Instead he looked back at a photo behind her. A boy with a large fish. "The fish are getting sparse as well."
She resisted the urge to sigh with relief. This was her contact. Her cover hadn't gotten out. "You must be Jensen."
The boy gave a smirk. "To some." He looked around. "Let's find somewhere more private. Come outside?"
Amelia gave her best fake smile. "I could use some air."
The two walked outside into a small alley. It was eerily quiet, and she tried not to think of what could possibly be hiding in those shadows. The other institute girls wouldn't have batted an eye. She tried not to think about all the ways she was failing.
She was on the ground in a moment. Gasping she tried to lift herself up, but was met by a firm boot on her chest. "Jensen?"
"Cut the act 'Delilah.' "
Darn it. This was not, in fact Jensen. She should have known. He'd known the code though. How? Her face was the picture of pure innocence. "I'm afraid I don't know-"
"You're one of those institute girls. The ones that slip through the cracks, and leave nothing but destruction in their wake."
"Wow. You must be quite the fan. " She used this moment to dig her hidden knife into his leg and roll to safety. "Tell me how you managed to hear about us."
"Oh please. Your reputation proceeds you. A gorgeous girl hiding out alone at this spot? That's pretty much the only explanation. "
He wasn't nearly as menacing as Amelia had initially thought. Actually, he seemed no older than her. Quickyl she had him pinned up against the wall with her knife to his throat. "Well, Diamonds are beautiful, but they're also strong. Now, Tell me how you know about me?"
"Because I'm the one who was sent to kill you."
