Let The Games Begin

I remember when the games started, just a few years ago, but a yearly tradition. The games only happen is the most severe of weather, to make sure we all have a fair chance. At first the games were easy, almost too easy and I’m afraid to say that the creators realized this; causing each game to become more and more difficult.

“V-Verena” the voice was calm, but loud. I could get my heart start to pound. What did they just say?

My eyes shifted to the front of the room, where a small blond headed lady stood in front of a podium. Her eyes were glossy, as if she was holding back tears, and her cheeks had grown a sickly pale color.

“Verena Colima” the voice stated plainly as could be. No, that can’t be right. Me?

I felt my body leave my chair as gasps fillled the room. I slowly marched up to the podium, where the rest of the contestants stood, dragging my feet hoping to wake up from this terrible nightmare.

“And last, but certainly not least..” the voice, of the lady who had called my name, trailed off for a dramatic scene, “Matteo Fliner”

A tall boy, with curly dark hair, stood up and walked to the stage; taking his place next to me.

“Now, as you know, these six contestants are legally abliged to participate in these games If any of the six contestants wish to forfeit, and sentence to a dozen year in prison, then please step forward.”

A part of me wanted to step forward, but I would rather take a chance with death than be sentenced to twelve, excruciatingly long, years in our maximum security prison. In the end no one stepped forward, causing the short blonde lady to continue.

“Very good!!” Her voice echoed throughout the room. “Now let me explain, this years game consists of three parts. You must complete each part before you move on to the next part, simple really.” She took a few steps away from the podium and began walking towards the line, her eyes lingering on me for a few seconds too long.

“The first task” she began, her voice as loud as ever, “Kill Verena Colima.” Eyes flickered to me like a wild flame on a candle. “On your mark, get set…” her voice trailed off once more. “LET THE GAMES BEGIN”.
