WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a letter to a friend, from the perspective of someone living 100 years in the future.
What commonplace things might they mention that would surprise a reader now, and how can you use these to drive an interesting narrative?
Dear Friend
Dear friend,
They say this letter might reach the past, so… hi. I live in 2125. It’s loud here, always bussing with drones, holograms, artificial voices. Silence doesn’t really exist anymore.
People don’t talk much either. We send though notes. Fast. Clean. Empty. I’ve never had a real conversation without a screen between us.
So I’m writing this like you used to-Slow, messy, and human. I don’t know what your world looks like right now, but if you can still go outside without a filter mask please do it.
I’ve never seen a real ocean. Just projections.
I’ve never felt real grass either. Just fake plastic grass.
Please don’t let the little things fade. They turn out to be pretty big things.
Best regards,
Your friend from the future
