STORY STARTER

A scientist creates a robot with near-human sentience, but realises that it is lonely...

Battle Bot.

The weary scientist threw a battered spanner across the room and watched as his life’s work chased after it.

Millions of lines of code, thousands of dollars put into its brain alone and yet the robot was as smart as a dog.

It hadn’t talked yet, frustrating the scientists that had slaves away at it for years.

At least it could understand questions and was obedient, if curious.

A thought came to the scientist as he watched the robot lift a leg against the stained wall to drain some oil against it.

What it it was lonely?

They had enough materials to make another at half the cost and in a few weeks another robot came to life, looking around the room at the sleep - deprived workers.

When they introduced the two robots there was a horrible fight.

The instant they locked glass eyes war was had and they battled each other at every re-introduction.

The bosses weren’t happy and after a huge fight that almost killed the newer robot the scientist decided to give it one more go.

‘Just one. That’s all you get.’ The boss had warned.

He didn’t have time to reboot them fully, but as they woke up he realised that they might learn from each other and learn to love -

“No! Hey! Put him down!”
