Your hands are shaking as you stand there in the pouring rain on the stage, staring out in fear and shock at the empty stadium suited for thousands is empty aside from you and three others. Cities are flooded and abandoned just beyond your view and the world is nearing its final minutes. You and your friends are silent as you each have your instruments in hand. You look down at your microphone and then back at your friends, who are silent and waiting for you to give the command.
You realize what you have to do as the storm picks up and gets closer and makes the wind scream in your ears and the thunder rumble in the distance. You realize that the time is ticking down and you don’t have much time left on this earth as the cool rain pelts your face. You know it was fate for you and your friends to be the last four people alive and in this stadium. One last show for one last night.
“There’s only one song I want to play.”
That’s all you have to say for them to understand and you start to hear the lead guitarist strum the first few notes to the song. You join in as you begin to sing the melancholic lyrics.
‘_So long to all my friends_’
You put the microphone on the stand,
‘_everyone of them met tragic ends_’
Your hands shake as thunder shakes the ground like a mighty beast reminding you that the time is limited and to make it count. As you push your fingers through your hair, you continue to sing.
‘_With every passing day, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight_’
The sound of your voice echoes through the stadium, the lyrics seeping through the sound of the rain and thunder as you reach the chorus.
‘_And if they only knew what I would say_’
The lightning flashes overhead Illuminating the stadium. But for that second it’s not empty. There is a crowd filling every single seat and cheering. You squint and try to make out there shapes but they’re too hard to see but you know what it is. A crowd filled with ghosts. The ghosts of everyone who should be here today but instead died tragically.
‘_One day I’ll lose this fight, as we fade in the dark_’
‘_Just remember you will always burn as bright’_
You inch towards the second chorus as the song begins to reach its crescendo.
‘_Be strong and hold my hand_’
You turn around to your friends, still singing but meaning the words as you look at each of them.
‘_Time, it comes for us, you’ll understand_’
‘_We’ll say goodbye today, and I’m sorry how it ends this way_’
The water begins to rise up to the stage, seeping into the flooring and inching towards you and your friends feet.
‘_If you promise not to cry_’
‘_Then I’ll tell you just what I would say_’
Tears begin to well in your eyes as you see the crowd fade in an out with ever passing flash of lightning. You will be joining them soon.
‘_If I could be with you tonight_’
The wind tries to drown out your sound but the speakers blast the music all throughout the city, even though there is no one there to hear it.
‘_I would sing you to sleep_’
‘_Never let them take the light behind your eyes_’
You sing out with a power that has never been matched. The years pass by in your mind as you know the song, and the world, are nearing its end.
‘_I’ll fail and lose this fight_’
The water is getting closer to your knees and you know the song is coming to a halt. You have less than a minute.
‘_Never fade in the dark_’
_‘Just remember you will always burn as bright_’
You walk over to your friends and you all stand in a circle, looking at one another with melancholic smiles, tear stained cheeks, and running stage makeup.
‘_The light behind your eyes_’
‘_Sometimes we must grow stronger and you can be stronger when I’m gone_’
‘_When I’m here no longer, you must be stronger_’
The final chorus begins and the tears are streaming down your face.
You sing with all the passion on earth. You sing with every memory, sad or happy, every emotion, every confession, every sensation, pain and war, love and peace, joy and anger.
You smile as you watch the wind pick up even more so and the water thrash out in the stadium and the crowd celebrates on and the ghost echo of them singing along and yelling reverberates through the walls with every flash of lightning. The water creeps up to chest level, then up to your neck, until you begin to sing the last lines. Losing power as you begin to give into the elements. The instruments behind you have begun to fade out and you know what you will see if you turn around.
Earth. Population: 1
The four of you did it. You made the last night count.
‘_The light behind your eyes…’ _
‘_The light behind your eyes…_’
You smile as the water rises above your head and you close your eyes letting the cool water rush into your lungs and make everything fade out.
You can finally see the crowd cheering for you.
