STORY STARTER

Write a poem that includes this line:

'The mask is slipping'.

Thread By Thread

“The mask is slipping” I read on the internet at three AM,

It was weird because I could relate,

I could relate so bad,

I feel stuck and everyone’s about to find out.

I don’t care about anyone but you,

The reason of why I hide away,

Why I can’t show and live with the pain,

You’ll want me to share,

But this is only for me to bear.

It’s strange how it all goes away,

When you invade my brain,

But it all comes crashing back,

The second you’re not by my side.

Even if I were on my last breath,

I’d never let anybody see the truth,

What’s been going on,

It’s for me to hide and for you to never know.

A perfectly knitted mask,

Every thread a believable lie,

One that I so confidently wear,

Until nobody wonders if I’m okay.

You saw right through everything,

Heard cries of help that never made it out,

Saw right through my lies,

Untangled my riddles and found the way to my heart.

I can’t help but find shelter in lying and shielding myself,

I don’t want anybody in,

Everyone has to stay out,

It’s the only way for me to be okay,

Even if I’m not but you’re safe.
