WRITING OBSTACLE

Tell the reader something important about your character by describing what they carry in their pockets.

The Sea And The Shore

Siren walked past the stalls selling worn clothes, old spices, half-rotten food, and shiny offering stones.

Not what she was looking for.

More clothes, except expensive looking.

Shoes with buckles and fancy leather.

Finally, she came upon a stall selling books. Keegan would love them.

She found a book of the fairytales he’d read as a child that got lost on the ship.

“Excuse me ma’am, how much for this one?” She asked.

The woman took the book and examined it as though she’d never seen it before.

“Two coins.”

Siren dug through her trouser pockets, searching every inch for a coin.

A piece of cloth,

A button,

A small offering stone,

A flipblade knife from Selly,

An old incense stick,

One coin,

Her father’s pocketbook,

A dead flower, given to her by Leander,

Some pocket lint,

The ring Leander threw into the sea she caught,

And finally another coin.

She dropped the money in the woman’s hand, and she gave her the book.

Siren tipped her newsie cap in thanks, and walked back the way she’d come to the ship, her brown braids flopping against her shirt.
