I'll Always be with You

His eyes squeezed tightly as he clung desperately to the shirt he had in his hands. "You can't go," he pleaded as he felt fingers run through his hair, making the hot, wet tears finally fall from his eyes.

"sweetie, you know I would stay if I could," the sweet voice cooed back to him. "Tonight will be our last sunset. You will never see me again." The older woman let out a sigh as she pulled him onto the hospital bed with her, groaning from the pain the effort caused. "I wish I could stay with you forever, Xavier. You're my absolute favorite person, my grandson." she said as she cupped his cheeks and wiped his tears. it only seemed to upset him more from the way his lips trembled and more tears fell.

"It's not fair, granny! I wanna go with you! Take me with you!" His voice had raised in volume as he clung to her hand. He was scared to let go, because if he did, he was scared she would vanish right in front of him.

"Honey," her voice cracked with tears she told herself not to cry, "I'll always be with you. In your dreams, in your head and especially in here," she had taken her hand away from his face and placed it on his chest, pointing right to his heart. "I can't be with you physically, darling, but I'll always be right here as long as you'll have me."

Xavier just took in a big, shaky breath. He had snot and tears running down his face. His eyes were red from crying, and his heart mourned for his grandmother, even though she was right in front of him. "But... But you still have so much to do, granny!" he tried pleading with her again, not understanding that this was something that was out of her control to decide. "We still have to go to the cabin one more time and do that puzzle, and you still have to teach me how to play chess, and, and, and-" he was cut off by his grandmother's hushings as she brought the child closer to her chest and rocked him.

"let's sing one last lullaby together, okay?" she waited to hear a yes, or at least feel a nod, but she just felt the sobs rack through his ribcage. She could feel her heart breaking as he just held him tighter and waited a few moments before starting to whisper, "You are my sunshine," she paused to take a breath, hoping the younger would join her, "my only sunshine," she paused again, only to have Xavier pick up where she had left off.

"You make me happy, when skies are grey," he sang halfheartedly with a waivering voice.

"You'll never know dear, how much I love you," they song softly together, the sound of xavier's sniffles filling the room.

"Please don't take my sunshine away," they finished, and xavier buried his face into his grandmother's chest, wrapping his arms around her in a hug. She brought her arms around him, and adjusted his legs, so he would be more comfortable. "I love you, Xavier. More than words could ever say to you." she could hear his muffled, 'i love you, too' as he didn't dare pull away. "Your mom's gonna come back to get you, okay? Just remember what I told you. I'll always be there with you, no matter what."
