Growing Up
Natalie had just turned 19 years old. With her birthday, she made an announcement to her family. She was moving out. Obviously, her parents had questions. What about them? What about her pets? What about school? She didn’t even graduate yet, she was still a year away from that. But Natalie never did well in school, her having an attention deficit disorder and not be able to be medicated made it quite hard to do well in school, to be absolutely fair.
„Mom, dad, I know. It’s sudden. I didn’t think it was going to be this soon either. But to be completely, uhm, honest with you… School just isn’t working out. I mean, you see it too. I don’t have enough grades to pass, I don’t feel comfortable there… I need an out. I’m stuck,“ she explained as she was starting to tear up. Confrontations were never her strength. Her dad was tearing up as well, her mother had a smug look on her face - if looks could speak, she would have definitely said „you’ll never succeed“.
Natalie wiped off her tears though. She was ready to move on, no matter how hard it was going to be.
„Where?“ her mother asked coldly. „…Norway,“ Natalie said softly. She knew this was going to be the hardest part - moving to a completely different country. „Norway?“ Her dad looked at her with disbelief and tears in his eyes. Natalie nodded.
She didn’t want to leave her parents, her pets nor anyone. But she knew she needed this to grow.
A month passed by and day D was there. Moving day. Her parents understood, kind of. Her dad sort of fell into depression - she was his only daughter and their parents rainbow child. But she was going to be there for them, even from a distance. And honestly, she didn’t mind getting on a plane whenever they needed. They’re still her parents and however rocky their relationship might have been in the past, she loves them. And will prove to them that this was the right decision for her.
