COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a poem or story about a mirror struggling with the fact that she has no identity of her own. (What could this be symbolic of?)
Mirror, Mirror
“Mirror, mirror on the wall,
You must answer when I call.
Am I most beautiful of all?
Mirror, answer when I call.”
What I want to do is lie
Or maybe I could even cry
Because I, to you must tell,
Though you be so fair and fell.
There is a beauty you would destroy
Like she was a useless toy.
Her face is fair. Her heart is true.
And she would give her love to you.
But you, fair Queen, delight in pain
And you are more than rather vain
You will destroy all things of beauty
As if it is your sacred duty.
But all to you, I must confess
Though it cause me great distress
To say that you are not the fairest
I divulge all at your request.
“O mighty Queen, so fair and fell
All to you, I am sworn to tell.
There be a damsel, fair and true
She is more beautiful than you.
But dear Queen you must beware.
Do not hurt the damsel fair.
For doing so to you will bring
Calamity in everything.”
The Queen, she listened not to me
And brought her own calamity
Which also ended my own curse
And so I end this little verse.
But remember this tale of vanity
Lest you cause your own calamity.
Heed the warning of this, my verse
Lest you fall prey to your own curse.
