STORY STARTER

Your main character can't go to sleep without this one thing…

Dreamkeeper

I couldn’t sleep. Not without my Lucky Lullaby Lamp. Every night, it glowed a soft, cotton candy pink and hummed a sweet tune. I’d had the lamp since I was little. But tonight, it just flickered. Then, it started buzzing like a mosquito then died. I tapped it, and checked the cord. It was plugged in. “Come on, don’t do this to me.” I whispered, as if it would actually respond. Nothing. The light then flickered again, forming weird patterns on my ceiling. Dots, dashes, almost like… it was trying to say something.

Was it uh… Morse coding me right now? The dots kept going, faster now. I grabbed my phone from my nightstand, downloaded a Morse code app, and punched the pattern in. The translation popped up:

LOOK OUTSIDE.

Ummm, creepy. But, I looked outside my window and I froze. My backyard was glowing just like my lamp did only stronger, and brighter. I slipped on my slippers, crept outside, and stepped into the calming glowy night sky. The air smelled like candy scented mist. Little pink lights floated towards me, circling the lamp I was clutching. Then, whoosh! The lights zipped inside it, and the lamp flicked back to life, brighter than ever.

The lamp began humming it’s tune again, soft this time. And once I brought it back to my bedroom, new words in English this time glowed on my ceiling.

Sweet dreams, dreamkeeper.

“Who? What?” I said in confusion. Then, like it was winking at me, the light blinked once, with a little pulse. I had no idea what was going on, but in that moment, I didn’t really care. This was awesome. That night, I slept better than I’d ever had. I was the dreamkeeper.
