POEM STARTER

Submitted by Its_Ady

Write a poem about a bird who was once human.

Even now, it remembers what it was like to have hands, to touch, to hold, and to feel. Now wings beat where arms once moved, but the memories never fade.

The Cost

The irony

Of the iron bars

No longer being the thing that cages me

The wishing

For the ability to fly

No longer the empty dream

The fall

From apex predator to prey

Was long, though I soared to a landing

The grass

A luscious emerald green

Faded to brown on this side of the fence

The memory

Of touching, holding

Plagues me like an unending nightmare

The adage

Of being careful what you wish for

Was never truer than it is for me

The regret

Of taking my life for granted

Racks my brain every day

Once human, now avian

The freedom gained is not

As glorious as I believed

And the cost

Of everything that I've lost

Is greater than I could have anticipated
