WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Frankie Famighetti

Create an origin story for a common saying, such as 'break the ice' or 'once in a blue moon'.

Your story should explain how this expression came to be, and why it means what it does.

Moonborne

"you were born under a blue moon, the last one that we as humans got to witness"

'But mother, that still does not tell me how my father died', Luna scrunched her eyes closed, she had been blessed by the last blue moon so tears she shed in the purest sadness were blue opal.

Her mother was the last of the 'Gilded' matriarchs, born and raised under a dying golden moon, she was head of her house, was unable to show emotion as the pulling of the tides under a golden moon took all of them during the rites which gave her the title of 'Gilded'.

Her husband, Luna's birth father died on the day that the last blue moon was witnessed, which so happened to be the day she was born, he was born under the mark of the moonless sky, on a night so full of stars, that their universe formed the last ever blue moon and thus his fate was sealed.

He would die, so she could be born, he had walked into the blue moon's tides, it was not until he could no longer feel the sand under his feet that he heard the first cries of his last borne. His legacy, he continued to swim out further, feeling the swells of the tides take his body, he had been blessed by the blue moon so the tides were strong.

Luna was cradled by her mother who watched without emotion as her husband got taken by the blue moon's swells.

Luna's mother will never tell her this story as it is part of being a family born under these two moons. she will always ask each year until she turned 18 and met her partner whom was born under a moonless sky...

And thus the cycle began again.
