WRITING OBSTACLE

Create a character who fits a stereotype in every aspect except one. Reveal this aspect of them towards the end of the story.

What Does That Even Mean Girl

“Move it, losers.” Krystal Hayes hissed at a group of boys who were busy crowding over a fight. They parted like a sea and watched her as she strutted down in heels down the hall.

It wasn’t really a fight but a beat down and Kevin was the one on the ground, blood leaking from his nose. If he had one thing to thank Krystal for it was that she was drop dead gorgeous so much so the fight took a pause and he took it as an opportunity to push David off of him, grabbing his cracked glasses and running away. It was cowardice and he’d probably be beaten up again later but story of his life.

He fit the stereotype of every nerd in existence he likes science, wears glasses and is pathetically small for his age group. It was like he had a sign for the alphas to target and torment him.

It wasn’t like he was the only stereotype either, Krystal fit the queen bee role perfectly. Gorgeous, probably dating the quarterback with how much she hangs out with him and most of all she was a bitch. She spoke like she was the boss and everyone owed her something.

Of course, everyone let her do that cause that’s Krystal Hayes. Who could refuse someone like that?

Kevin was already dreading how he’d go home later with jocks practically all around ready to pounce on him.

“Kevin Specter and Krystal Hayes, you’re partners.” Professor Langley announced making everyone stare at him.

“Lucky dog.”

“Hey, nerd let’s switch names.”

“Ooohhh Krystal has that A in the bag.”

Kevin could only stare at Krystal as she handed him her glittery phone.

“Put your number in, I wanna get this done quick.”

At the library, Kevin fidgeted about as Krystal opened her Mac laptop, her nails as glittery as everything else about her. The microplastics must be worth it.

“You okay there, Kev?” Krystal asked, not looking up from her laptop.

“I could do this all by myself.” Kevin said, lowly.

“And risk my A plus record? Yeah right.” Krystal scoffed. “As much as you like science you get B’s too often. You should really rethink being a nerd.”

Kevin felt like he was hit.

“Aren’t you busy with that quarterback?” Won’t he come in here and beat me up? Kevin almost added. Everyday was like an MMA match he didn’t sign up for.

“Ew he’s my stepbrother and we’re planning on breaking my parents up.” Krystal paused. “Oh, don’t say that to anybody or I’ll kill you.”

“Rather you than them honestly.” Kevin imagined how she’d step on his heart with her sharp heels. It would be a quick death.

Krystal stopped typing. “You know the thing about those assholes is if you fight back even a little bit they’d stop. They just want your reaction, Kevin.”

“Easy for you to say, you’re one of them.”

Krystal pinched his cheek. Her sharp nail dug into it, Kevin wondered if there was a cut. “Don’t insult me like that. As much as you group me in with them, I am not a bully.”

Kevin rubbed his cheek. “Yeah? What about Maislin Meyers? Didn’t you bully her out?”

“She stole from me and tried to blackmail me with a rumor that I was pregnant. I took it up with lawyers and she moved away.” Krystal crossed her arms. “And where’s my thank you for saving you so many times?”

“You have never saved me.”

“Yeah what about the time I broke up the fight so you could run? What about the time I called David and his goons saying Jack wants them? What about the time I rang the alarm so the boys wouldn’t gang up on you in the shower?”

“That was you? They thought that was Carter!”

“Carter likes his reputation. So its no big deal. All I’m saying is I don’t like bullying nor am I a bully. Got it?”

“Why would you even do those things for me?” Kevin let himself hope.

Krystal gave him a side eye. “I don’t like you like that so hopeful eyes go away. You look like my puppy with those big cheeks.”

Of course he’d be compared to an animal. “Really comparing me to a dog?”

“A cute dog.” Krystal said laughing.

It wasn’t instantaneous but Kevin slowly built up the courage to fight back against his bullies knowing someone like Krystal Hayes was looking out for him. All he needed was to scream, place some cameras and have her lawyers saved in her contacts. If these jocks wants to get into varsity college they better have clean records.
