STORY STARTER

Write a suspenseful scene, in a story of any genre.

You are writing a single scene, so you do not need to provide backstory or outcome, but your characters and plot should still make sense. Consider the elements of suspense, like pace, atmosphere, motivations, and stakes.

Mary

On that day when the dawn broke, the wind was soft and quiet, from her window Mary could hear the stream of the of the river which lies just below the meadow of her home.  It brings her peace from the bustling noise of her husband and children getting ready to leave for the day.  Few moments after she observe a strange figure looming in the grass. Closer and closer the figure now appeared to be a man carrying a briefcase.  Mary removed herself from the window for she knew she wasn’t expecting anyone for the day.  The man climbed up her steps and sat on the porch. He sat the briefcase down right next to his legs and rest his hat on his knee.  He seemed to made himself right at home.  He didn’t knock on the door to introduce himself, rather her opened the briefcase took out a cigar and began to smoke, with a puff here and there.  Without alerting the man, Mary let him indulge in this unordinary visit.  After he had enough of the cigar, he got up and started to pace along the porch, back and forth, back and forth without the notion of knocking at the door.  Mary covered her mouth with her hands in order not to break a sound, but sweat and tears trailed down her face.  In anguish she tipped toed to the bedroom to search for the bat under her bed for she knew this was not ordinary.  As she slowly walked down the stairs her footsteps made a squeak and she saw the shadow of the man stopped at the window then continued to pace.  With tears and sweat wiped from her face she was ready in motion for whatever lies on the other side of the door.  Mary looked at the clock and saw that her husband and children wouldn’t be back for quite some time.  It was indeed getting late and she began to wonder if this man wasn’t going to leave.  Not to make another sound Mary pressed her back against the front door armed and ready to open the door, but she decided to peep through her window to see first what this man actually looked like, but his back was turned to her. She closed her curtain and slide her back against the wall and sat on the floor.  Hurry up she thought, it was almost time for her family to get back for all she knew this man could be a robber.  The man reverted back to smoking his cigar this time he leaned himself against the post with his legs crossed staring at the door.  In a whim of frustration Mary made a loud knock then opened the door with her bat.  She lunged at the man with her bat and knocked him at the head unconscious.  He fell to the ground and she began in a wail of scream.  She ran inside the kitchen quickly just to grab some strings to tie him up.  She sat down and rested for a while watching the man to see if he would wake up but he didn’t.  Mary knew her family would be home any minute, so she dragged the man to the shed and tied him to the post and locked the door.  In her frantic state she rushed back to the house and took a shower  got dressed to await her husband.  She made dinner as usual for her family and greeted them when they came home.  They sat at the table and had their meal, then the children rushed off to do their homework and got ready for bed.  Mary watched her husband take out the trash to the back, he heard a sound in the shed but he thought nothing of it and walked away.  The door of the shed made a squeaking noise open, when he turned around he saw a man tied to the post muffling.  He screamed, “Mary!” With his wife looking at him through the window.
