Low Battery
I really really don’t like parties, but Jayia dragged me to one anyways. Dont get me wrong, Jayia is my best friend and I love her but sometimes she just drives me crazy all the way. This particular party she dragged me to took place at her cousins house. It was a birthday party and I did not want to go but she begged me to be her plus one.
So, for the sake of my best friend, I went.
I knew I wasn’t going to know anyone there, except Jayia and her parents. We arrived at the party in matching outfits (Jayia’s idea). The party already had so many people in the backyard and I wanted to stay in the car.
But, for the sake of my best friend, I went.
She insisted that I meet her cousin, the birthday boy, and his family and friends. Then to the drink table for a friendly chat with her grandfather and uncle, whose jokes always went flat. I didn’t want to go and meet the whole family, i only wanted to run. But jayia was having so much fun.
So, for the sake of my best friend, I went.
It was time for the gifts, it was almost over. I snuck to the back. I had to sit down. The sounds and the sights made my battery run low. Then as i sat down, in a chair in the back I found that I wasn’t alone. Jayia’s grandma sat in the chair next to me. She looked at me and smiled.
“Gotta recharge those batteries, huh?” She asked
“Yes.” I hesitantly replied. “Crowds make me feel jittery and my battery is always low.”
“Then maybe you need to go.” The grandmother said. “The party is almost over, the gifts are nearly done, Jayia has been dragging you all over.”
“But I don’t want to ruin her fun.” I replied, looking at her in shock. “I don’t want to be that one.”
“She’ll understand,” the grandma said. “You’re best friends are you not? Jayia will be by your side more often than not.”
I looked at Jayia’s grandmother and realized she was right. Jayia would understand, she knows that I’m not so social. She would go home with me, right?
So, for the sake of my battery, i went.
I walked to her side where she was talking to someone that I, of course, did not know. When she turned to me I said “jayia, i need to go. I don’t wat to spoil your fun but my social battery is gone. The party is nearly over, will you go?”
She looked at me in shock and said “girl, you only had to ask. You’re not spoiling my fun, not at all. I was waiting until you were ready.” I sighed with relief and looked to where the grandma sat. She was right, of course. I only had to ask.
So, for the sake of my battery, we went.
