The Eight Sin

If there were an eight deadly sin, what would it be?

With all the sins that are out there knocking on each people's lives, whispering on each people's ears every second, I wonder-- could self-blame, self-doubt, or self-sabotage be added to that list? Could they become sins, too, so people would learn to fear hurting themselves the way they fear hurting others? So maybe, we’d develop a conscience that stops us before we wound our own souls, too?

This is the 8th deadly sin I want to add. Because if sins against others, against the community, and against the world, are recognized and condemned, then, why is it not considered when we harm ourselves? When we inflict pain towards ourselves? Through endless criticisms, self-doubt, or repeated self-destruction? The endless loops of overthinking. The haunting flashbacks of things and situations we wish we hadn't done-- but did. And now, we live with the ache knowing we can't change them.

You laugh, you exercise, you work on something, and you even pray, but your mind wouldn't let go. It just doesn't stop. You try to brush it off. But these thoughts aren't just any dirt or dust that we can brush off using our hands. They’re not even living things-- yet they find their way back, faster than lightning, more persistent than pain. And the worst part? They come from within. From our own minds, inside our own bodies-- yet we can’t control them.

So I ask: if hurting ourselves were labeled a sin, too-- would we finally find the strength to fight and win it? The way we fight and win every other temptation?
