STORY STARTER

The writer stared at the post-it on the wall. She knew it would change her life for the far, far worse…

The handmaid's tale

Margaret sobbed. She wasn’t prepared for this.

How could she be?

Just yesterday, a letter had been delivered to every author's home across the country. It was brief, but horrifyingly clear:

"Greetings, writers.

This letter has been sent to you by superior forces to inform you that, by June 9th, you will all be detained and sent into the story of your very first novel. You will be required to survive the experience of your main character. This will be televised and broadcast nationwide as a social experiment. Prepare wisely.

Good luck."

At first, she thought it was a joke. But after calling every author she knew, it became painfully clear, it wasn’t.

Now, she sat collapsed on the kitchen floor, staring at the letter pinned to the wall.

Nadine’s tear-filled eyes drifted from the letter to the bookshelf where she kept her earliest works.

There it was: her very first novel.

The title glared back at her in bold, unforgiving letters:

The Handmaid’s Tale.
