STORY STARTER

Submitted by A.Brosien

A princess has been waiting in her tower for her Prince Charming to save her. But after 30 years, enough is enough, and she decides she's going to save herself.

Continue the story... (you could take this prompt more metaphorically, and write in any genre that fits the theme!)

The Princess and the Potion

Every day, I dream of his eyes. In my dreams, they are as bright blue as the sky. In reality, I don't know what color his eyes are. He never bothered to show up. Every day, I stare out the window of my tall tower, hoping to see a horse with a handsome man sitting atop galloping towards me. Every day, disappointment lingers as I go to bed. The only reason I am here, is because 30 years ago I was kidnapped from my castle. The women who kidnapped me had a big scheme to hold me for ransom. But my parents refused to pay the money. They loved their money more than their daughter. I suppose even the women, who I call Lady Melissa, took pity on me, because she kept me as her servant, instead of returning me to my cruel parents. But I would have preferred to be free. Lady Melissa was at least nice enough to leave me a few books. Most of them tell of a helpless princess, trapped, waiting for her Prince Charming. I almost laugh at them, until I remember that I myself, am in the same situation. Stuck waiting for someone else to rescue me. Someone who still hasn't showed up in 30 years. As I sit on my bed, with yet another story of a helpless princess, I sigh, wondering what people like me and her could possibly do in our situation. That's when it came to me. I snap the book shut and hastily rush back over to the bookshelf.

"Where is it? Where is it?" I mutter to myself, as I run my finger over the spines of the books and push my long brown hair out of my eyes.

"Aha!" I exclaim, when I find what I am looking for. It's a completely green book, expect for the title which is emblazed in gold on the front. I trace my finger over the letters. Alchemy. I flip through the pages until I find what I need. I smile to myself, as I start to wonder how I will acquire the ingredients I need for the potion. Once I have them, I decide, I will take matters into my own hands. No more waiting for my prince charming. All I need are the ingredients for the sleeping potion for Lady Melissa.

"Sophia," a voice calls, "I'm home!" I snap the book shut. Lady Melissa is home. I return just in time for me to see her lock the trapdoor she come through. I've seen this before, though I have never given it much thought. I knew there was no way to get the key. Lady Melissa kept it with her at all times. I smile, knowing that now I have a way. Lady Melissa's blonde hair is pulled back into a tight bun, and she wears a wine-red cloak.

"Welcome back," I say, "would you like me to make you a drink?" Lasy Melissa collapses into a chair and looks pointedly at me. My cue to get started. I rush to the kitchen and begin brewing a drink for her. Once it is ready, I bring it to her and ask if I may be excused. She waves her hand dismissively and I rush upstairs to my room and pull out the alchemy book. I smile when I realize that most of the ingredients are already in the kitchen. I just need one more. I rush back downstairs.

"Lady Melissa," I say, "I was wondering if you could possibly get me some lotus petals."

"What for?" She asks.

"For a new drink I'm trying for you," I lie with ease.

Lady Melissa smiles at the thought of a new drink and gets up. She tells me that she'll be back with them in a few hours. I tell her goodbye and wait a few minutes after she has left to make sure she is fully gone. Then, I go to the kitchen and get the rest of the ingredients for the potion. I bring the alchemy book downstairs for reference and start brewing. By the time I hear the trapdoor open, I'm ready for the lotus petals. I go outside and collect them from Lady Melissa. I add them to the potion, and it turns a smooth white color. I know it ready. I spoon some into a cup and go outside to give it to Lady Melissa. She takes it and sips at it eagerly.

"How does it taste I ask?" She yawns, and I resist the urge to grin. She smacks her lips.

"It tastes-" she yawns again.

"Gosh, I'm sleepy." She waddles over to the nearest armchair and sinks into the cushions. Within minutes she's out, her arm going limp and dropping the cup, splashing the potion all over the carpeted ground. I carefully step over the puddle and examine her, making sure she is full asleep. I reach into her pocket and fish around, before I feel something small and cold. I pull it out, and sure enough, there is the key. I almost laugh with excitement, but I hold it back, telling myself I'm saving it for when I get outside. I unlock the trapdoor and peer inside. It's dark inside, but there's just enough light for me to make out a staircase. I lower myself to the first step. I take a few more steps, before I start to hesitate. Should I really leave behind all I've ever known? I shake my head, snapping myself out of it. I realize I should probably pack a few things though. But I must hurry, since the potion doesn't last forever. I hastily climb back up and grab a basket. I fill it with food, clothes, water and books. Once I decide I'm ready, I descend back down the staircase in the trapdoor, closing it behind me, making my decision final. I speed down the staircase before I can change my mind. At the end is a brown door. I open it and am rewarded with a blast of sunshine to my face. I breath in the fresh summer air. Breathing has never been better. Long grass sprouts from the ground, and I resist the urge to lay down in it. First, I have to get as far away as I can. I start to run for the vast forest that lays ahead of me. But I pause when I see what's emerging from that forest. A rather handsome man seated atop a horse, galloping towards the castle. I almost laugh out loud when my brain registers who that must be. My Prince Charming. Just a bit too late.
