POEM STARTER
Submitted by Olivia Pemberly
Write an etiological myth in the form of a poem.
An etiological myth, or an origin myth, explains how something came to be the way that it is today.
Ozarcus
All know the story of Olympus
Few know the mountain throne that never was.
Demigods and mortals conspired
Only to learn the wrath of the gods.
No manmade mound ever stood
More proud, more green, more broad.
Men managed a godly act - Built high
Until rivers flowed and storms took the sky
Generations contributed lives to the vision
Dreaming the marvel of Mount Ozarcus
All through, Olympus’s gaze was persistent
A growing mountain that reshaped a continent,
Pulled a shoreline into a great gulf reefs,
Drawing renaissance of idol-worshipping chiefs.
The gods let them build these centuries
Only to sear the memories
What destruction such defiance wrought.
It was shattered to the last rock.
Now all is left is an enchanted forest
where demigods hide in the rubble
And prey on those seeking refuge
From the shade of Mount Olympus
