High Above the City

Here, they could not see me.

Here, they could not hurt me.

I could vaguely see black shapes roaming the barren city and hear the occasional scream. On this cliff, however, nothing but the crisp, cold air could touch me, not even Revenants. Their screeches echoed between the desolate buildings, meeting my ears as a whisper. They had been here for months already, annihilating life as we knew it, invading cities and eating people alive. But up here, with Silas, high above the city, I felt untouchable. “June?” a voice said behind me. As if he were reading my thoughts, Silas appeared behind me. I smirked as he sat down on the edge of the cliff. He grasped my hand, and when I looked over, I could see his eyes were glossy with unshed tears. “What's wrong?” I said, inching towards him. He unexpectedly pulled me into his arms and kissed me, grabbing my shoulders. God, I loved Silas. I suddenly felt like I was falling—I felt a sudden burst of wind. My eyes snapped open. I screamed, looking up at Silas, who stared at me indifferently.

I was falling. Down, down, down.

Silas had pushed me off the cliff.
