STORY STARTER

“I’ve never met anyone like you before!”

“You should be grateful for that.”

Write a story that contains this section of dialogue. Think about who your characters are, and the nature of this exchange.

Please Don’t Go. Not Now.

“I’ve never met anyone like you!” I scream, words ripping through the air like a chainsaw, but he is a tree that cannot be cut down.

“You should be grateful for that.” He looks away, in shame? Doubt? The tears don’t stop streaming, running, sprinting down my face.

“But I need you! The world, needs you!” The knife shakes in his hand.

“What you need,” he says, pausing for a moment, and swallowing. “Is someone that won’t hurt you. That won’t leave you.”

“You won’t leave me! You wouldn’t! Please- please don’t leave me.” I plead, my voice small. “Don’t leave me now.”

He brings the knife closer, closer, closer to his throat. “Stop this! Stop this please!”

He shakes his head, drawing blood. “You think you will cause me harm if you stay, but more harm will be caused if you leave. So help me I will take that knife from your hand and rip myself open if you go.” I tell him, my voice shaky.

A clatter, then silence. The knife is on the floor. He is not. Then I am in his arms. And it will be alright.
