CUBE ATTUNED

[PART TWO OF 'CUBE']

In the blank white room, sat a simple black table, and two chairs facing eachother. In one chair sat the boy, Dawson. In the opposite chair sat a woman in a black shit, wearing shades. Dawson had come to know 'these people' as 'agents'. He knew they worked for the ones who had murdered the professor. He knew they were interested in the cube, which now rested in the middle of the table halfway between the two of them.

"Hello, Dawson. You may call me Agent Harper." The woman said, her hands folded neatly together in front of her. She spoke calmly and slowly so the child understood.

"Are you with those people who murdered doctor Les!?" Dawson accused.

Agent Harper was a little taken aback. She had forgotten how blunt children could be when it came to subject matters they shouldnt know about. "Uh, no. We're here because of that little trinket you tried to take onto this planet. Its quite interesting to us."

Agent harper started to reach her hand towards the cube.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Dawson warned.

Just then a bolt of electricity arked off of a corner of the cube and connected with Agent Harper's index finger. This caused her to reel her hand back in sudden alarm.

"I told you." Dawson said. Then he himself reached over and picked it up, taunting her with it before he set it back down.

"Dawson, how come the cube dosnt shock you? It shocks everyone who tries to touch it. It shocked those security guards half to death when you arrived here."

"Oh thats because Doctor Les made it mine." Dawson said matter of factly. "It only answers to me."

"Fascinating!" Agent Harris said. "What does it do besides shock people?"

"Lots of things! Its like a robot but smarter." Dawson said excitedly. "I Dont know everything it can do but we can just ask it."

"It talks?"

"Of course! How do you think I found all this out? Duhhh! Go on ask it something." Dawson said.

Agent Harper cleared her throat and spoke up to the cube. "Hello cube. What is your purpose?"

There was no response.

Dawson shrugged. "Maybe it only listens to me. Hey Cube, Agent Harper wants to know what your purpose is."

Suddenly the cube spoke in a completely robotic voice. "My purpose is to protect you, Dawson. I must advise that you leave this place and these people immediately."

"Thats not very nice." Agent Harper commented.

The cube ignored Agent Harper and kept speaking directly to Dawson. "These people are dangerous, Dawson. You must trust me on this. I want you to leave this room now. Do not worry about any physical resistance, I am programmed to kill."

"Um, I think I should go now." Dawson said, starting to stand up.

Agent Harper became visibly concerned and began to stand up out of her chair as well, one hand instictively on her hip where she carried an Ion pistol. "Im afraid you are being detained, Dawson. You cannot just leave here. We will stop you."

"Miss Agent Lady, um. I wouldn't upset the cube further. It will harm you to protect me." Dawson cautioned.

Dawson picked up the cube and then turned and walked over to the door. As he approached, the red electronic lock suddenly switched from red to green, indicating the door had unlocked itself for Dawson. "Thanks cube!" Dawson said.

"STOP!" Agent Harper yelled and pulled her pistol on the boy.

"RUN!" The cube ordered.

Dawson opened the door just as a shot rang out. But instead of striking dawson, it hit a force field that surrounded him. Then the cube shot electrity across the room, targeting the pistol, blowing it up in the agent's hands.

Dawson got the door open and then took off down the hallway.

"Go straight to the end." The cube told him.

Other agents noticed him and began chase, also firing thier pistols hopelessly into Dawson's force field. As they ran, all of the electronic door locks they passed switched from red to green.

"Go left!" The cube told Dawson as they neared the end of the hall. "Take the second elevator in the lobby ahead."

Dawson scrambled past two more agents who tried to block his path, and then slid into the elevator like a baseball player stealing home plate. The elevator doors closed and Dawson was once again alone with the cube.

"I will take us out of here." The cube said. "Don't worry Dawson, I can interface with all electronics telepathically. All you need to do is get me near a door lock or computer and I can hack it. I can also protect you to a point where no one can touch you. As long as you hold on to me, okay?"

"I understand." Dawson said. "The doctor made you, and he was my friend. I trust you because he wanted me to have you."

"Good." The cube said.

"But... What about you?" Dawson asked.

"What do you mean?" The cube asked back.

"I mean, like. What would you like to become? Where would you like to go? My home planet is gone, my family is gone. You're the only one I have left, cube." Dawson said, feeling sad.

"Just like you, I have no home." The cube sympathized. "There is nothing else out there that even thinks as I do. I am a unique being, and I hope one day to change that for my race."

"You want more cubes?" Dawson asked. "So like everyone gets a cube?"

"Not quite. I want more cubes so that I am not alone." The cube said.

"Oh cube. You are not alone. Youve got me!"

"Indeed." The cube replied. "Together I think we should head to the Capitol Planet. There we can find a home and I can get to work on developing another one of my kind."

"That sounds like a plan!" Dawson agreed.

The elevator finally came to a halt and the doors slid open. In the lower lobby, A crowd of agents stood there waiting their arrival.

"We are leaving!" Dawson announced loudly and stepped off the elevator towards them. spikes of electricity began to show around Dawson like an egg. Any agent close enough got a jolt of electricity.

"You are under arrest!" One of the guards said.

Dawson grinned, holding the cube out. "I wouldn't try that if I were you..."
