STORY STARTER

"I was just trying to be what you wanted."

Use this piece of dialogue to open a story surrounding a character who is struggling to meet someone's expectations.

Mistakes

"Clementine, you are a _failure_. You failed." My dad’s words echos through my head the second he said it._ I am a failure. I failed. _"You failed when you didn’t retrieve Tinka, you failed when you got caught by Alric. You failed since the day I gave you that mission. I should have given it to someone else," my father shakes his head in disappointment.

I feel a lump in my throat. "I just was trying to be who you wanted," I reply quietly, my voice cracking.

My father looks up. "Oh Clementine.." he looks at me with pitiful eyes. I don’t want him to look at me like that. Like I’m something to feel sorry for. "I didn’t- I didn’t mean it like that. It’s not you, it’s me. It’s my own fault for letting you go out there on a mission like that-"

I scoff. "Dad, I’m twenty. I am the daughter of the leader. I was literally born into this. My mother was the founder. I trained for this all my life."

"But you didn’t succeed," he says like he’s trying to reason with me.

_ I am a failure. _

"No-one would have!" I argue. "I got further than anyone else would have and you know that. No-one else would have gotten through the castle walls! No-one else would have escaped the Tungsrite then have a full conversation with the man who kidnapped me and still escaped!"

"Clementine, do not raise you voice at me."

"I’m not-!" I pause, take a deep breath, and continue. "I’m not raising my voice, dad. But can’t you not see? I am the best member you have in this rebellion but you can’t see it. It’s like you don’t see me as anything else but a little girl. No matter how good I do, how far I get, that is all you see me as. A little girl that only ever makes mistakes."
