I was working when he came up to me,

Eyes glittering with untold fury.

“Look at you,

calling me spineless behind my back.

“Yes it’s true,

But at least I’m not some corporate hack!”

Workers busied themselves and I could see,

That every single one was listening to me.

“Let’s go somewhere private - please?”

As soon as we left the tension eased.

My best friend as angry despite the cool shade,

He told me he felt confused and betrayed.

“What I said was that it was interesting that we both have no spines,

“I believe in that conversation you lagged behind.”

My slimy best friend almost went into his shell,

He was embarrassed - so I tried not to dwell.

“I’m so sorry I caused a fuss…”

I smile “getting me out of work was a plus!”

We went back to the colony and I hitched a ride.
