POEM STARTER
Compose a poem centred around the theme of 'the one that got away'.
Too Little, Too Late
Who is he now?
Well-read
Well-traveled
Well-off
Well above and beyond
The humble roots he came from
Ambition hidden behind nonchalance
Jealousy masked by criticism
Too young to realize that
His rejection of society
Was him protesting
Too much
Who was I?
Melancholy and cynical
Crestfallen
And broken
Because I was
As always,
My own saboteur
Sitting on the sidelines
Waiting to be seen
Too little
Too late
Who would we have been
If Fate had other plans?
I am the mediocrity
He so desperately
Clawed above
He left me behind
Long ago
So why have I
Apparently
Not let go?
Why does this scar,
Of all the scars
And wounds
That have
Hurt and healed,
Still burn?
Who am I now?
Well-behaved
Well-intended
Well-aware that
Maybe I'm not so different
From that girl
Maybe all the work I've done
Has just been
One step forward
Two steps back
Maybe I'm still waiting
Waiting for him
To realize he hasn't changed either
From the boy he was then
And that what he
Pushed away
Really was
What he wanted most
But now
It would be him who is
Too little
Too late
