To Kill A Moth (Don’t)

Verse 1

There are advantages to being a moth opposed to a butterfly.

Moths are quieter, less prone to the spotlight.

They live in the night,

Tucking themselves in, and saying “sleep tight”

Tight like a shirt,

One that will squeeze.

One that everyone sees.

Verse 2

So why do moths look for light?

Maybe because it gets hard to see in the dark.

As their antennas stick to their face like wet hair.

Even moths feel despair.

When the night’s comfort is no longer there.

Verse 3

It can get crazy,

Alone in the dark.

Slowly slipping into insanity.

Realizing life’s one fucking/big

Catastrophe.

I mean the moth, not me.

Verse 4

Unable to change or survive,

The moth will die.

When it meets the light’s eye.

As it goes blind.

As it begins to cry.

Verse 5 (Moth not Fly)

Oh, why did you wander so high?

It will die in that spotlight,

Chasing attention like a fly,

Headfirst into demise,

After its own—ugly lies.

Verse 6

The moth will burn away,

Free from its cage.

Happy, and dead.

Do you care?

Final verse (7)

I will not die.

I am not a moth.

I will tell myself a different lie.

I will become a butterfly.
