The Moon Asks For Help
The human relationship with the moon is a curious one. The moon, a celestial satellite that reflects a lot of light, is the key element in illuminating dark, gloomy and tortuous nights. That is, if she is in her full phase.
It is amazing how human beings are never satisfied with the moon.
She almost never attracts enough attention.
She almost never shines enough.
She is almost never enough.
We have the terrible tendency to only notice her when it is at 100 or zero percent. Whether to praise or complain, we always do. She is only truly valued when she is complete.
Full moon. Full of life. Full of energy. Full of light. She is noticed, seen and liked. Which ends relatively quickly. Because, most of the time, she cannot reflect all the light she is capable of. Waxing and waning moon. Ignored. Underestimated. No one looks up at the sky to appreciate her. No one cares if there is light, because if she is not complete, if she doesn’t give everything of herself to the light, she loses its charm. Ironic, because these same people who devalue her so much are the ones who complain the most after a few days. In fact, in a few days, everything changes quite a bit.
New moon. She has no brightness. She has no light. She just exists, failing to show us light. And then all that love disappears, as if her efforts to keep herself lit every day have gone down the drain, just because she is no longer full. And suddenly, everyone hates her. Even though she's there, doing her job, her lack of shine clouds people's vision and she becomes a monster, because she's bringing darkness to all of us. In fact, no one realizes that they're blaming the wrong thing. The moon is not to blame for not being illuminated. It is our fault, it is our position on Earth, it is our point of view. If the planet were not blocking the sunlight, the moon would be shining as it should. The planet blocks her shine, yet demands and complains and spreads hatred towards her. It is not fair. It never was.
In the end, she is just a satellite that is always there all of the time. She is only seen and loved when she is shining completely. If she is shining, but a piece is missing, she is ignored, until the moment she goes out, when she becomes hated. People only notice her if she is full or if her shine fades. She is tired. I wonder what would happen if one day she disappeared forever. If one day I disappeared forever.
